Duvet Sizes for All Beds

When buying a duvet and duvet cover, it's important to get the right size for your bed.  Otherwise, you could find yourself swimming under miles of fabric and feathers, or fighting your spouse for the covers.  However, it's not always enough just to buy the size duvet and cover that matches your mattress.  Duvet sizes can vary as much as ten inches between brands, which makes a big difference in how your bedding looks and feels.  Here's some basic information about the dimensions of duvet covers. 

Cot Size Mattresses

Cot, or crib sized mattresses are usually about twenty-eight inches across, and fifty-two inches long.  You may be surprised that duvets are available for mattresses this small, but you can actually find many different options.  Duvet covers for these beds tend to be kids' themed.  This is one mattress size where you'll need to make sure you have a cover and duvet that aren't too large, as babies can have trouble with them.

Twin Size Mattresses

Most kids' beds are twin, or single size.  The standard for these beds is thirty-nine inches wide by seventy-five inches long.  A double sized duvet will often drag on the floor if used with a twin bed.  Be sure that you know whether you're buying for a regular twin size mattress, or for the following type. 

Extra Long Twin Size Mattresses

You may encounter the extra long size when your child goes to college, or in some bedding stores.  Buying the right duvet size is important, since getting a regular twin size can result in chilly ankles in the middle of the night.  Extra long twin beds are eighty inches long. 

Full Size Mattresses

At fifty-four inches wide by seventy-five inches long, these are the mattresses that most adults and couples own.  These types of mattresses will be easy to find duvets and duvet covers for, as they're the most common. 

Queen Size Mattresses

For those who like a little more room in their beds, queen size duvets and duvet covers will fit a queen bed.  Again, check the measurements of the duvet you're thinking about buying to make sure you'll have enough space to comfortably cover the bed.  Queen size mattresses are sixty inches wide by eighty inches long.

King Size Mattresses

Kinds size mattresses are twice the size of single mattresses, measuring seventy-six inches across by eighty inches long.  Buying a duvet and cover for a mattress of this size can be expensive, so budget carefully. 

California King Size Mattresses

For the person who wants an extremely long bed, there's the California king.  It's important to make sure that you're buying duvets of the correct size, because at seventy two inches wide by eighty-four inches long, regular king sized duvets are unlikely to fit well.
