Caring For Your White Down Comforter

A white down comforter is an attractive addition to just about any bedroom, but it’s also a big investment, and can be hard to keep clean.  You don’t want to shorten the life span of your comforter by not taking care of it.  Here are a few tips to help you keep your white down comforter in perfect condition.

1. Save the care instructions and keep them on hand.  You should read care instructions for your comforter before you even buy it.  This will tell you if the product is one that’ll work well for you and your lifestyle.  After you take the white down comforter out of the package, take off the care instructions and put them someplace safe and readily accessible.  Alternatively, you can transfer them to an index card.

2. Think about how you’ll use your comforter.  If you tend to spend a lot of time snacking or lounging on the bed, your white comforter might require treatment to resist stains.  You may also wish to invest in a white duvet cover.  For a slightly greater cost, you’ll be able to protect your white down comforter with a cover that’s much easier to launder, and which can even be bleached.  A white duvet cover keeps your bed looking crisp and clean, but it’s simpler to take care of than the comforter.  As an added bonus, you can change your duvet cover when you want a new look, without buying an entirely new comforter.

3. Make sure you have the laundry facilities to clean your white down comforter.  If you don’t have the ability to take care of it at home, take it to a professional.  Many dry cleaners and laundry facilities have the experience to treat a down comforter well, and will return it to you in pristine condition.  That’s worth the cost of an occasional professional cleaning.

4. Turn and fluff your down comforter on a regular basis.  Doing so will keep the down from compressing and degrading, and will increase the comforter’s insulation value.  That makes it a lot more pleasant to sleep under.

5. If you need to store your white down comforter, be careful.  While plastic is a popular storage material, it can actually trap moisture, causing mold and mildew that’ll stain your comforter and leave behind a nasty smell.  Store down comforters on a shelf in the linen closet instead, and be sure to unfold and air them out regularly.

Taking proper care of your white down comforter will permit it to last a long time.  These comforters are a big investment, but they could serve you for years if treated well.  Learn how to care for your comforter before you buy, and you’ll be glad you took the time to do it.
